HOUSE ON PETER LOWE
A home in Halifax’s Westmount neighborhood sheds decades of fragmented renovations in favor of a calm, cohesive redesign - one that reclaims space, clarity, and a sense of refuge beneath newly vaulted ceilings.
Set in Halifax’s quiet Westmount neighborhood, the home sits within a sheltered yard framed by mature trees and hedges. The existing structure had accumulated decades of renovations, leaving the layout and exterior fragmented. The design brief was simple: begin again. Reorganize the plan for contemporary living, expand the footprint to meet a growing family’s needs, elevate the interior finishes, and restore clarity to the home’s overall composition.
Inside, the reimagined layout opens into a connected kitchen, breakfast nook, and living area anchored by a full-size pantry. A generous mudroom - with laundry and a water closet - supports the flow of daily life, while a hidden office tucks neatly behind custom built-in foyer doors. The new primary suite introduces a sense of retreat, complete with a double-sided fireplace, lounge space, walk-in closet, and ensuite.
Throughout, the material palette remains warm and grounded. Natural white oak floors run continuously, while exposed oak beams and a timber-lined kitchen ceiling introduce texture overhead. Quartzite surfaces add quiet depth, and subtle color accents appear in the kitchen island, pantry cabinetry, mudroom millwork, and breakfast nook upholstery.
At the rear, three new gabled rooflines reshape the silhouette and carve out cathedral volumes for the breakfast nook, primary bedroom, and ensuite - bringing light, height, and a renewed sense of calm to the home.
