HOUSE ON PACIFIC
In Halifax’s tree-lined West End, a quietly transformative renovation balances tradition and modernity in equal measure.
Designed as both a retreat and a social hub, this 2,400 square-foot residence thoughtfully bridges past and present through a material-forward, light-filled intervention that expands a classic home into a layered, contemporary dwelling.
Clad in warm white shingles and vertical wood boards, the house blends into its traditional neighborhood while signaling its modern sensibility through clean detailing, expansive glazing and a black standing seam metal roof. Inside, a pair of distinct volumes - one existing, one added - are tied together through a carefully calibrated sequence of spaces and materials.
Original Douglas Fir floors extend from the entry into the heart of the home, where a sunken dining room introduces a quiet moment of impact. Here, polished concrete floors and a wood-clad ceiling define the addition, its lower elevation allowing ceiling heights to expand from eight to ten feet. A custom millwork wall - a monolithic composition in black and white - unifies kitchen and living areas while concealing appliances and storage. A 16 foot folding glass wall at the rear dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior.
Upstairs, a contemporary stair with integrated lighting leads to the bedroom level. The primary bedroom is filled with natural light from a large window and twin skylights, enhanced by a double-height ceiling punctuated with exposed wood beams. A walnut screen offers a tactile separation between sleeping and dressing areas, while the ensuite’s open-concept layout and custom lighting continue the material restraint found throughout.
Throughout the home, the palette is tactile and grounded: polished concrete, exposed brick, natural stone, and warm woods offer both contrast and continuity. Accents of deep green - the homeowner’s favorite color - appear in the avocado quartzite, painted walls and ceilings, and in subtle textiles, tying the rooms together with a quiet cohesion.
By navigating the nuances of addition and renovation, this home achieves something unique: a space that is at once rooted and refreshed - equally suited to intimate evenings or lively gatherings.
