HOUSE ON JUBILEE

In Halifax’s South End, a 4,000 square-foot renovation and addition reimagines a traditional home through a modern lens.

From the street, the house still carries the familiar posture of the neighborhood, but along the side and rear, the architecture loosens - shifting into a series of sculpted, contemporary volumes that step forward and back in a playful but disciplined rhythm. Clad in a mix of black horizontal siding and crisp white vertical boards, the exterior highlights the playful massing that steps in and out across the rear elevation. Four distinct volumes articulate the addition, creating a sculptural silhouette that feels both dynamic and carefully composed. Large openings along the back look outward to the surrounding green space, softening the transition between house and landscape. Inside, the home embraces a warm, contemporary palette: natural wood tones, creamy white cabinetry, and subtly textured finishes. The main level gathers all shared spaces into a continuous, family-oriented flow: foyer, den, powder room, and an open kitchen-living-dining area that expands onto a wide cedar deck. The stepped deck mirrors the massing above, forming an outdoor room that gently descends into the backyard - anchored by a mature apple tree and framed by tall hedges. Upstairs, a primary suite with walk-in closet and ensuite is joined by three additional bedrooms, a home office, and a shared bathroom. Generous window openings frame views toward Connrose Park, ensuring each room feels connected to the landscape and naturally lit throughout the day. The result is a home that remains respectful of its context while embracing a fresh architectural expression - timeless at the street, playful at the back, and tailored to a family’s everyday rhythms.
