HOUSE ON BERLIN

A traditional home gains space, light, and understated modernity - without losing its neighborhood charm.

In Halifax’s established West End, a 3,000 square-foot home for a family of four has been reimagined through a thoughtful addition and renovation. The brief was clear: create a more functional and contemporary interior while ensuring the house still felt at home among the mature streetscapes and century architecture that define the neighborhood. Inside, the design leans into a palette that is calm, bright, and understated. The kitchen - now the center of daily life - features white cabinetry, a wood island accented with brass kick plates, and a full-height stone backsplash that adds quiet luxury without calling attention to itself. Throughout the home, contemporary details appear in refined gestures: a quartzite-clad fireplace anchors the living space, a glass-panel stair railing keeps sight lines open, and penny tile inlays add subtle texture underfoot. Birch flooring runs throughout the main levels, grounding the spaces with warmth, while touches of the original house remain intentionally visible - an existing brick chimney is left exposed, and the original wood stair railing is refinished rather than replaced. The main level is organized around ease and flow. A formal foyer greets visitors, while a separate mudroom supports the daily comings and goings of family life. A water closet and formal dining room maintain the traditional structure of the original layout, but the living room and kitchen are now open concept, connecting directly to a new back deck for indoor-outdoor living. Upstairs, the second level features three bedrooms, including a primary suite with its own ensuite and walk-in closet. An open office area brings light and flexibility to the landing, joined by an additional bathroom that serves the family’s needs. The basement extends the home’s functionality with a play area and guest bedroom - spaces that can evolve as the family grows. Outside, the architecture strikes a balance between new and familiar. The addition maintains the traditional form and proportion of the original house, while a fresh material strategy signals the update. The result is a home that feels contemporary without feeling new, bright without being stark, and distinctly personal to the family who lives there.
