HOUSE ON ARMCRESCENT
How do you transform a family home for contemporary life without losing the character and memories that make it worth keeping?
For this Halifax West End residence, DB Architecture reworked a 3,000-square-foot house and addition to support a growing family while respecting its history. The home originally belonged to the husband’s family, with his father having added a single-storey living room at the rear decades earlier. The renovation builds on that legacy, adding a second storey above the existing addition to create a primary suite.
A complete interior renovation improved the home’s insulation, heating and cooling systems, functionality and flow. On the main level, a new foyer and mudroom lead to an office, powder room, pantry and open kitchen, dining and living area. A 12-foot-long patio door connects the space to a generous deck and backyard, extending the home’s living areas outside. Upstairs, two children’s bedrooms share a bathroom with the primary suite, while the finished basement accommodates a playroom, TV area, laundry, bathroom and guest room.
Throughout, a restrained palette of natural materials brings warmth and continuity to the interiors. White oak floors and cabinetry pair with Taj Mahal quartzite countertops, a feature backsplash and fireplace, while Zellige tile, checkered marble, brass hardware and fixtures add texture and detail. The kitchen centres on a substantial island with reeded cabinetry, a quartzite waterfall sink apron, integrated backsplash lighting and a plaster range hood.
The result is a home that bridges generations, combining the familiarity of a family house with the flexibility a young family needs to grow, gather and stay for the long term.
